The opening on Tuesday night was fantastic. The food was amazing,{Thank You Carmen}, the mood was warm and so receptive. The photographs and stories of Jacques seemed to touched everyone there. Many people came up to me to say they were moved by the show. I was also very pleased with how all my artwork looked against the cherry red walls. ~ Artist Helene Lacelle is having a show of her art and retrospective photographs of her close friend Jacques Couillard who was taken by brain cancer in February of 2010 - the show is dedicated to his memory and all his friends are invited to share those memories - at Carmen's Veranda, 1169 Bank Street, Ottawa from Oct.4 to Dec.31, 2011.

These photographs are snapshots of Jacques (and Helene) between 1977 and 1987, the college years, the dancing years, the traveling years, the shopping at Goodwill years, and the 'who the hell am I years'.

This is my old 'funny' pal Moses. Moses is funny as in smart, witty, funny. He's not really old but I have known him for about 20 years. The first time Peter and I noticed him he was blowing square bubbles at Futures Bakery on Queen West. We were all kind of broke in those days and I remember Moses made me a white chocolate birthday cake. It was so good!

I had a fantastic weekend in Trinity Park in Toronto. QWAC attracted tons of hip and happy people
from all over the world. Well, mostly Toronto. Sold a whole pile of art!!! Got to eat great Chinese food
on Spadina and met up with some old funny pals from way back.

Mounting old embroidery on woodblocks - a project

I'm getting a whack ready for QWAC. Yes, I'm getting a whack of woodblocks ready for the Queen West Art Crawl , Sept17-18, in Toronto. My big thing is painting, collaging, mosaicing bright images on woodblocks. I must have sold thousands by now. Am I running out of ideas? Heck no. In these images I demonstrate how to mount embroidery on a woodblock. 1}- I cut the pieces of embroidery to fit the size of woodblock.

I trim the excess edges of my embroidery off.


Then using regular carpenter glue I spread it evenly all over the embroidery. I mix my glue with water to make it easier to spread. Let it dry. {CLICK on READ MORE to see entire project}

I paint the area that has no stitching. Let it dry.

Once I'm happy with the painted areas I then cover the entire surface with resin. That is a slow process and takes at least 24 hours to dry. But the finish is spectacular giving it that galssy look.

I would go back in a heartbeat. The heat, the sun, the palm trees and the amazing modern architecture like Aria, Crystals and City Center. Of course the Bellagio is up there with charm. Since our hotel was connected by tram to the Bellagio, I went there often during my one week holiday with my mom and sister. My best visit was early in the morning around 6:30 am when almost no one was up.

Cathy from the Ottawa School of Arts is hanging the NEW summer show this week in the boutique and here are my 2 entries. Original drawings on photographic paper in distressed vintage frames.
Also, I was at the IDLE Hands Spring show last Saturday at St-Lukes, CHinatown. It was full of artisans and crafters that I had never seen before. The organic treats were fabulous (maybe a bit too fabulous!) Jennifer Stone the organizer, puts on a good show, thanks Jenn!

Never seen before collages / paintings from way-back when I was young-ish and meaner, my gluing techniques back then were a bit clumsy. None the less, i could still slap together
a mean 'Vogue' or 'Interview' inspired collage making each cool model look a bit less
polished by smudging their beautiful make-up or messin' up their hair. Me bad.
Series was made in the mid-90's.

I cannot even begin to describe the incredible detailed beauty in the work of lacemakers from the region, Montreal and Quebec City, I saw today at the RA Centre. Rows and rows of linen threads, mahogany bobbins and gold pins and tons of book on cross-stiching, crewel, lace and beadworks from Europe.

In making docs, I do not believe in wandering into a scene/story/subject without having gone through it myself for a reasonably long period of time; otherwise, one can be fooled into making something 'not real'. An example of that is my recent project, now 'in the can' called THE DECLINE, FALL and RISE of PAYNE which traces the life of Robert Payne over a period of a couple of winters. I've known ROB for over a decade and have had a long term friendship with him. He's been an actor in my previous fiction films as well as in my theatre pieces. In other words, I've known him through thick and thin, ups and downs so he can't pretend some things that he's not - for all of us who really have experienced our subject, the truth is not only 'out there' but 'in there' i.e. in the doc. ..........(read more)

Me, Maria and Mina. It was so wonderful to see Maria again after her 6 month long trip to South America. Of course it's always nice to see Mina too. We ate in the atrium of 'Le Droit' Building on the market at the vegetarian restaurant, the Garden of Peace serviced by the disciples of Sri Shimoy. (the guy who cant paint). I have to admit it's the best food I've eaten in Ottawa in years.

Hung my new show up at the GREEN DOOR RESTAURANT, 198 Main St. Ottawa, with the gracious help of my friend Joan Alexander who took the #16 bus at 6:30 am to come and help me.
I'm showing abstracts paintings I painted 8 years ago that I never framed or exposed anywhere. The restaurant has tons of wall space , on the south wall, (photo above) I hung a batch of original collages on wood. I brought lots of my popular framed folk art prints too. The 'Brad Pitt' Fan Club meet every morning at the Second Cup.

Some cafes are more fun than others to hang art in,
The Second Cup on Bank Street at 2nd Ave in the Glebe
is one of them. Stephanie the manager was so ever helpful
and sweet moving furniture around then Lester, a cafe regular offered to give
me a hand setting up my show too. As he handed me the hammer
and nails he talked about his famous brother the actor Norm
Macdonald and his other famous brother Neil Macdonald the
CBC journalist. Thanks Lester!
